Origins of the Name "Al-Habsyi"
The Mission of Imam Abu Bakr bin Ali in the Lands of Abyssinia
Sayyidina Abu Bakar
bin Ali Al-Habsyi"Wafat di kota Tarim, Hadramaut tahun 857 H setelah 20 tahun membina masyarakat Habasyah."
The noble family name "Al-Habsyi" was first conferred upon the venerable saint Sayyidina Abu Bakr bin Ali bin Ahmad bin Muhammad Asadullah bin Hasan At-Turabi bin Ali bin Al-Faqih Al-Muqaddam Muhammad bin Ali Ba'Alawi.
He was titled "Al-Habsyi" because he embarked upon a spiritual mission (siyāḥah) and resided in the lands of Abyssinia (Habashah / Ethiopia, East Africa) for approximately 20 years. He spread Islam, nurtured local communities, and founded scientific zawiyahs before returning to his ancestral home of Tarim, Hadramaut, passing away in 857 AH.
His descendants inherited and honored this noble surname. A central pivot in later generations was Imam Ahmad Shahib Syi'b (Imam Ahmad bin Muhammad Al-Asghar bin Alwi bin Abu Bakr Al-Habsyi, d. 1038 AH), from whose sons sprang the major branches that flourish today in Yemen, Hijaz, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Africa.
